DUMBARTON slipped down the SPFL Championship table to eighth place when they lost at home to Queen of the South by the only goal of the game.

A crowd of 874 were in the Bet Butler Stadium to see former Sons ballboy Jim McIntyre bring the Dumfries side to battle for the three points that would put them above Dumbarton on goal difference.

The visitors dominated the match against a lack-lustre home side for all but the last few minutes, but only had one goal to show for it.

Ex-Son Iain Russell charged in from the left after only a few minutes and shot from a tight angle. His effort hit Sons skipper Andy Graham and was diverted into the net for a freak goal.

It was only late on in the match when Bryan Prunty and Colin Nish came on as subs up front that Dumbarton started to trouble the Doonhamers defence. Their best effort was a Prunty shot which went inches wide.

The picture shows Mitch Megginson at full stretch, watched by Iain Russell.
